A little over three years ago I was encouraged by some friends to do my first triathlon. I pointed out that I really didn't know how to swim and was pretty sure that precluded my participation. However, they were not detered and with a lot of encouragement and support I learned. One of the first things I was told before getting into open water to swim was "you'll need a safety buoy" and a friend directed me to Colin's Hope to purchase my first buoy. It was the first I'd heard of the organization and their incredible work in drowning prevention education. I've not done an open water swim since then (outside of a race) without one and never will.

I now really enjoy swimming but am not what you'd call a strong swimmer by any means. I was in awe of those who participated in the annual Got2Swim event, swimming anywhere from 2 miles on a team to completing the entire 10K solo! I hoped that "one day" I might work up to being on a team of 2-3 but didn't think it would be any time soon. Especially since in June of this year I had a total knee replacement so am in "rehab" mode. I see many postings on social media asking "Tell me something positive you've done or learned during this pandemic." We are definitely in need of some strong lemonade during these times. Well mine came in the form of the swim event going virtual this year. Participants can swim any time between July 8 and September 2 (Colin's Birthday) and accumulate their swims into their goal distance. I've chosen the 1/2 marathon distance. My running days are done, and yet, here I get to complete a 1/2 marathon! In the water and for an amazing cause! Blessed indeed! I will be swimming in a pool as well as in open water over the next several weeks.

I know this is a very challenging time for all financially. If you are able, please consider a donation in support of this swim event. I am swimming in honor of Grace and Jackson, two children from different families who drown in backyard pools. These are also the names of my beloved grandchildren and I swim and promote water safety in their honor as well.

And if a financial contribution is not feasible at this time, I'll appreciate your prayers and cheering support!
